What is SkillPoint?

SkillPoint is a workshop format built around a hyper-realistic production line simulation. Originally created as a training exercise by General Motors and the Toyota Corporation, SkillPoint participants engage in hands-on, real-time experiments to see how proven training methodologies can streamline work processes, reduce downtime and provide a standardized approach to workplace improvement.

A SkillPoint for Toyota Kata workshop immerses participants in the process of rapidly learning and testing new skills, making incremental improvements with each production line cycle. This training model engages learners in hands-on, real-time experiments to see how Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata can help remove obstacles, accelerate learning and standardize work processes.

Just like on a real production line, a SkillPoint workshop can get hectic — but experienced Kata coaches are on hand to provide support and direction. Participants practice employing skills like time management, communication and critical thinking, all while gaining the confidence and ability to coach others.

What a SkillPoint Kata Workshop Covers

SkillPoint for Toyota Kata is an excellent solution for organizations with a tight timeline. Developed through a partnership between Lean Frontiers, the TWI Institute and the Center for Employee Development, each partner leverages their proven instructional methodologies and firsthand experiences working with Toyota.

Participants are immersed in a workplace simulation that introduces:

  • Foundations of Improvement Kata and Coaching Kata
  • Consistent, methodical processes for transferring knowledge and skills
  • Practical behavioral patterns to create a lean work culture

The entire experience takes a cumulative 10 hours, divided up over 3–3.5 days. Following successful completion, each participant will receive their 10 Hour Kata Certificate through the TWI Institute.

For those seeking a TWI Job Instruction (JI) experience, see our SkillPoint for JI workshop.

Step One:
Preparation

We start with an assessment and provide tailored recommendations for your workers and your workplace. KPIs are set, a communication strategy is planned and workforce orientation begins.

Step Two:
Education

Supervisors, team leaders and those who direct the work of others attend, participate and learn in our cornerstone programs: TWI, Kata and Standardized Work.

Step Three:

We work with you to plan a pilot program and teams begin to learn by doing. Through workplace practice and coaching, we help students accept the ideas and put them to work. We’re with you through every step of the journey.

Step Four:
Integration

We assess learning, validate pilot results, incorporate skills into routines, evaluate practices and culture, and measure performance against KPIs.

Step Five:
Certification

We execute worker and workplace certifications, including TWI Certification (student and trainer), Kata Certification (student and trainer) Train-the-Trainer Certification, and TWI:2018 Certification.

Step Six:
Continuation

We stay connected with planned reassessments, KPI checks, remedial coaching, and re-certifications to protect and grow your return on investment.
